Bassanio szerencsét akar próbálni Belmontban a gazdag, szép és erényes Portia kezéért. Ehhez pénzre van szüksége, és kihez forduljon, ha nem Antonióhoz? Antonio minden vagyona a tengeren, ezért kölcsönt vesz fel Shylocktól, a zsidó uzsorástól, akivel gyűlölik egymást. Shylock hajlandó a kölcsönre, még kamatot sem kér. Egy kikötése van: ha Antonio nem fizet időben, kivághat egy font húst a kalmár testéből. Az üzletet lakomával pecsételik meg. Amíg Shylock a keresztények nemszeretem vacsoráján időzik, a lánya, Jessica megszökik szerelmével, Lorenzóval, egy velencei nemes úrral. A hozományról sem feledkezik el. „Bearanyozza” magát apja pénzével és ékszereivel...
