Szétégett arcú férfi él titokban egy
nyolcadik kerületi lakásban: valamikor ő volt a környék rettegett ura,
az alvilág egyik vezére: a Herceg. Az egyik áldozata azonban egy életre
elcsúfította, így a Herceg bujkálni kényszerült. Régi „munkatársa" és
barátja, Köcsög tartja a kapcsolatot közte és a külvilág között.
Mindennapi beszélgetőtársa az egykori bérház házmestere, Samu bácsi, aki
nagyon megszerette a rovott múltú szörnyet, és látván, hogy a Herceg
egyre nehezebb anyagi helyzetbe kerül, dönt: albérlőt hoz a Herceg
lakásába egy fiatal, erdélyi lány személyében. A lány frissen jött az
erdélyi havasokból, nem ismeri még a budapesti életet. Samu bácsi ezzel a
lépésével elindítja a lavinát...
A tragikomédia megtörtént eset
kapcsán íródott, a magával sodró humor, és a reáltragédia keveredésével
hajtja a cselekmény a végkifejlet felé.
A darabot nagy sikerrel játszotta a kecskeméti Katona József Színház, ez az első budapesti bemutatója.

The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
