How are fairies born? Every 70 years on a spring morning – when in the depths of the forest, ramsons breathe forth their perfume – the fairy boys and fairy girls in love link arms and fly to the clearing, where they kiss beautifully. Then, every 70 years, shimmering soap bubbles fall from the sky, and in these soap bubbles the fairy children arrive to earth.Who blows these bubbles, the Good Lord or someone else? Nobody knows.

As it is a latent Kodály season, it seems only fitting that the concert at the OPERA honouring the events of 1956 should feature works by the composer. In that same year, the short-lived Revolutionary Council of Hungarian Intellectuals elected him as its president. Throughout his entire oeuvre, Kodály consistently reinforced Hungarian national identity. The programme gains both colour and a ceremonial character from the hymn-like and dance-infused compositions of his middle and later years.
János Hunyadi is responsible for the tolling of bells around the world; Mátyás Hunyadi is the hero of a string of folk tales; László Hunyadi inspired “only” an opera.
Please note that the auditorium is closed for visits during rehearsals. Guided tours are not available during performances.
