Ez nem is furcsa, hiszen ez a mű annak idején olyan merészen gondolkodott saját korának társadalmi problémáiról, és tarthatatlan állapotairól, hogy nem is maradhatott meg másként az emlékezetben, mint egy keserédes szerelmi történet, amelyben a hozományvadász, csinos magyar dzsentri meghódítja az Amerikából családjával hazatérő, gyönyörű milliomos lányt. Mindez így is van. Csakhogy közben felmerül számtalan erkölcsi, etikai, gazdasági, érzelmi kérdés. Igen, szerelmi történet, de egy kicsit sem lagymatag, mert ebben a műben az a happy end, hogy nincs happy end.
Mikszáth művében mindenkiről pontosan kiderül, hogy milyen. És akármennyire is a szerelemről szól, és a sok bonyodalom kapcsán talán még szurkolunk is a szerelmeseknek, és szimpatizálunk a dzsentriséggel, a leleményességgel, az úrisággal, az úriságból fakadó nagyvonalúsággal, egyszerűen nem lehet boldog végkifejlete.
Mert ahol ez a darab véget ér, valahol ott kezdődik a női önbecsülés.
