A Noszty família Bontó vármegye egyik ősi családja. Van egy haszontalan, jóképű fia és egy szép, férjhez adandó lánya. Az apa Kopereczkytől kér anyagi segítséget, s mivel nem tudja visszaadni, cserébe a lánya kezét ígéri a buta, de gazdag Kopereczkynek. Ám hozományt nem tud adni, ezért kijárja, hogy főispán legyen a veje a vármegyében. De nemcsak lányuk számára akarják biztosítani a vagyonos, előkelő házasságot, hanem fiúkat is kellő hozományhoz szándékozik juttatni a család. Így indítanak csatákat Tóth Mari óriás vagyonáért.
