Az emberi jellemábrázolás mélysége, a bemutatott erkölcsi problémák súlyossága miatt A női iskoláját (L'École des femmes, 1662) tekinti annak a darabnak, amellyel Moliére a komédiát a tragédia művészi színvonalára emelte.
A darab középpontjában a házasság áll. A felszarvazástól rettegő Arnolf biztosra akart menni, s így nevelt lányát, Ágnest szemelte ki feleségnek, akit elzárva neveltetett egy párizsi rezidencián. Elmélete szerint, a lány ebben a művi környezetben biztosan belé szeret, hiszen más férfival nem is érintkezhet. Ágnes azonban mégsem Arnolfba, hanem gyámapja jó barátjának fiába, Horace-ba szeret bele. A mit sem sejtő ifjú elragadtatottan számol be vetélytársának a lánnyal való együttlét örömeiről. Különböző bonyodalmak és vígjátéki fordulatok után végül Ágnes maga dönthet a sorsáról...
