The world-famous story of The Sound of Music – both as the most popular Hollywood musical film, and as a stage musical – provided lifelong experiences to many young generations alongside its half-century triumph. The sweet melodies and the timeless themes of love, family and zest for life, placed into a critical historical background, constitute the secret of its never-ending success.
PLOT
The musical is about the Trapp family – a widowed Captain and his seven children – and their newly arriving governess, Maria. The story takes place in Austria occupied by Nazis, right before World War II. Maria, this cheerful, free-spirited young woman, lover of music and nature, lives in an abbey as she is dedicated to become a nun. Sent to her new destination, the von Trapp villa as a governess, she brings love and music through her kindness and patience in the lives of the children who were raised with strict military discipline so far by their widowed father. Captain von Trapp has thoughts of marrying Baroness Elsa so far but having been impressed by Maria’s bewildering personality, he gradually becomes confused about his feelings – just as Maria does. In the meanwhile the Captain is ordered by the Nazis to accept a commission in the German navy, but as he strongly opposes the Nazi Third Reich, he decides on a plan to flee Austria with Maria and the children. The situation gets more and more threatening but the Kaltzberg Festival, where they were nominated by his friend Max to perform, provides them with a perfect opportunity to escape unnoticed.
Our offer
A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
This ballet's plot is inspired by The Corsair, a famous verse written in 1814 by Lord Byron, who towered over an entire generation of English Romantic poets.
A Streetcar Named Desire is Marianna Venekei's first full-length choreography. The project, lovingly nurtured for many years, is a collaboration between her and composer-saxophonist László Dés.
