Gabnai Katalin színikritikus, író, a hazai drámapedagógia jelentős alakja. Tévé-és rádiójátékai mellett több gyerekdarabot is írt, melyek témáját legtöbbször a magyar népköltészetből merítette. A mindenlátó királylány volt e gazdag pálya első mesejátéka.

Tüskerózsa, az eladósorba került királylány apja csak ahhoz a kérőhöz adja hozzá gyermekét, aki el tud bújni a lány elől. Igen ám, de ez egyáltalán nem könnyű feladat, hiszen a királylány „mindenlátó”, és eddig mind a 99 kérőjét megtalálta. Ekkor érkezik János, a szegény kondás, hogy ő is szerencsét próbáljon. Barátai, az állatok segítségével először a Tisza mélyére bújik, utána a nap mögé, de Tüskerózsa mindenhol megtalálja.

A királylánynak megesik Jánoson a szíve – meg belé is szeret –, és mivel nem szeretné, hogy a századik kérője is kudarcot valljon, el akarja küldeni az udvarból. De János nem adja fel, marad, és harmadszorra sikerül úgy elbújnia, hogy Tüskerózsa nem találja, így övé a fél birodalom és a lány keze.
