A Stuart Mária különös történet. Schiller drámájában is az a fő feszültség, hogy tudjuk, a történelem igazsága Erzsébet oldalán van, de Stuart Máriáé a rokonszenvünk. Maraini ezt még tovább gondolja. Bár Stuart Mária ül a valóságos börtönben, de Maraini drámájában sokkal inkább Erzsébet, az angol királynő érzi magát rabnak, a saját lelke foglyának. Mária szabad lélek, tud szeretni s őt is szeretik. Erzsébet azonban képtelen az érzelmekre, képtelen megbocsájtani, sírni és nevetni - igazából ő az, aki nem menekülhet. Dacia Maraini író, költő, dráma- és forgatókönyvíró, kritikus. a kortárs olasz irodalom meghatározó alakja 1936-ban született. Szülei is ismert művészek voltak, ő maga pedig Alberto Moraviának volt élettársa. Verseskötetei is népszerűek, regényeiben az érzelmesség keveredik mély emberséggel. Szereti a közeli és távoli történelemből venni történeteit. Dolgozott Pasolinivel, Ferrerivel, Margaretha von Trottével. Színdarabjai szerte a világban játszottak.
