1237-ben a tatár seregek vezére küldött egy levelet IV. Bélának: „… Tudom, hogy gazdag és hatalmas király vagy, sok katonád van, és egyedül kormányzol egy nagy országot. Ezért nehéz önként alám vetned magadat: mégis jobb és üdvösebb lenne neked, ha önként behódolnál nekem.
