Goldoni maga a két lábon járó XVIII. század. 1707-ben született Velencében, 1793-ban halt meg Párizsban. Élete első szakaszában bebarangolta Észak-Itáliát, dolgozott orvosként, ügyvédként, színházigazgatóként, darabjainak cselekményét többnyire megtörtént események alapján bonyolította. Ő volt az, aki a commedia dell’arte inkább vásári mutatványokra emlékeztető műfajából megteremtette az olasz jellemvígjátékot. Élete felénél hagyja ott szülővárosát és előbb a párizsi Olasz Színház igazgatója lett, majd az udvarban tanította olaszra a királyi család gyermekeit. Megérte a francia forradalmat - nem értett egyet céljaival. Utolsó nagy műve a francia nyelven írt Emlékezések, amelyben lejegyezte élete történetét. A hazugot 1750 körül írta meg.
