A szegény halász kifog egy halat a tengerből, melyről kiderül, hogy Vizitündér, amely arra kéri, hogy dobja vissza a tengerbe. A halász így is tesz, majd hazamegy és elmondja a feleségének, hogy mi történt vele. Az asszony azonnal visszazavarja, hogy a putri helyett, amelyben laknak egy takaros kis házikót kérjen a haltól. Teljesül a kívánságuk, ám már kevesli az asszony a házat, kastélyra vágyik. Ezt is megkapják a keszegtől, hanem azzal sem elégszik meg király, császár majd pápa akar lenni, de végül ez sem elég neki. A nagyravágyást megelégelve a Tündér újra szegényekké teszi őket, de végül megismerik a boldogságot.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
