Az irodalomtörténészek egyöntetű méltatása szerint Mikszáth Kálmán egyik legművészibb alkotása A fekete kakas, mégis rejtélyes okokból hangsúlytalan darabja maradt a mikszáthi életműnek. Ezért is lehetséges, hogy csupán most látható először színpadon.
