A történet egy reménytelennek látszó szerelemről szól. Edvin herceg rajong Szilviáért, a pesti orfeumcsillagért, de arisztokrata családja ellenzi ezt a rangon aluli kapcsolatot. A szülők mindent elkövetnek, hogy fiukat visszacsalják Bécsbe, hogy ott a neki megfelelő leányzót, Stázi komteszt válassza élettársául - ezért Vereczky Szilviának, a sanzonettnek New York-i szerződést intéznek. Ám a szerelmesek érdekében szövetkezik a kedves, bolondos Bóni gróf, az orfeum főpincére, Miska és ikertestvére, Alfonz, a Lippert-Weilersheim-ház főkomornikja, valamint Feri bácsi, Bóni orfeumi barátja. Főképpen ő mozgatja a szálakat: a pár jövőjének érdekében még egykori szerelmét, Edvin édesanyját is hajlandó leleplezni…
