The Magic Cupboard

Ferenc Farkas is one of the most important representatives of Hungarian comic opera. The Magic Cupboard, inspired by one of the stories in The Arabian Nights, was the composer's first opera: we get to watch the vicissitudes of the lovely Zulejka unfold in the fabulous Orient, as she works to free her husband from prison.

As to what the price for her husband's freedom might be, what purpose a cabinet big enough to fit four people is being built, and whether the wicked demons are incinerated in the fire at the end.... all this will be revealed at this production by the Opera's extraordinarily talented chorus, which will be directed by András Aczél and conducted by Kálmán Strausz.
