Az első kettőt még a korabeli mintákat alapul véve három tételben, a vonóshangzást kihangsúlyozva írta meg, de ezután már minden művében szerepeltette a menüett tételt, mint a négytételes forma 3. elemét. A szimfóniák mai napig elvárt formai követelményeinek kialakítása mellett munkássága során a fúvós hangszerek fokozatosan elnyerték méltó helyüket.
Míg kezdetben csak a dinamika erősítése volt a funkciójuk, Haydn szimfóniáiban a művek mondanivalójában fontos szerepet betöltő, technikailag és művészileg egyaránt komoly kihívást jelentő szólókat komponált a fúvós szekció számára.
Haydn szimfóniáit témáiban a rendkívüli ötletesség, sokszínűség, gazdagság jellemzi, melyek megszólaltatásához a komponista a korabeli zeneszerzői technikák mindegyikét a legmagasabb művészi szinten használta fel.

The series launched in the 2025/26 season focuses on composers whose operas receive special attention during the season. Yet there are many singers who do not find a role in the works of these masters, but who would gladly sing from their rich vocal palettes. The piano afternoons and matinees are for them, about them, and inspired by them.
