Nápolyban izgalmas események zajlanak. Octave titokban házasságot kötött szerelmével, barátja Leander oltár elé vezetné imádottját, apáik azonban már kiszemelték jövendőbelijüket. A fiatalok bajban vannak, Scapin, a leleményes, hű szolga pedig minden cselt bevet, hogy sikerre vigye ügyüket: mesteri módon felismerve az emberi gyarlóságot bábuként mozgatja a szereplőket.

A nemzedékek közötti konfliktusok minden korban megjelennek, a más szabályrendszerben szocializálódott idősebb korosztály képviselői próbálják átörökíteni nézeteiket, miközben a fiatalabb generáció tagjai kompromisszumokat nem ismerve járnák saját útjukat, dacolva a szülői fennhatóság ellen.
