Moliére komédiáiban szókimondóan és szellemesen pellengérre állítja az ember gyarló tulajdonságait. Legtöbb műve - mintha ma íródna – a családon belüli viszályokat, konfliktusokat ábrázolja. Félreértések, félrehallások, félreinformálások kusza és roppant mulatságos útvesztőin át, mindig a fiatalok és mindig a szerelmesek győzedelmeskednek. Moliére A fösvényben egy olyan apáról - Harpagonról - rajzol kíméletlen karikatúrát, aki a pénz imádatában nem ismer se embert, se Istent, és józan eszét is elvesztve mindent ennek rendel alá.
