Az Übü király Alfred Jarry főműve, eredetileg – egy rennes-i gimnáziumban írt – diákbohózat. Hébert úr, Jarry fizikatanára és vitriolos gúnyolódásainak örök céltáblája lett az Übü- figura magja, belőle teremtett tizenöt éves fejjel egy világirodalmi alakot: az olykor ocsmány, hálátlan, gyáva, kapzsi, gyilkos és zsarnok, olykor gyermekien amorális Übüt, akinek az emberiség nagy jellemcsarnokában van a helye.
