FANTASY. WITTINESS. COLOURS.
At this concert, Samuel Barber’s wonderful ‘Adagio’ will be performed not by a string quartet or string orchestra, but by a cello quartet. And, likewise, the ‘Pilgrims’ Chorus’ from Wagner’s opera ‘Tannhäuser’ will not be sung by a male choir, but by four double basses. At this event, four trumpeters will perform Ron Simpson’s incredibly witty ‘Sonatina’. Similarly, four bass violinists will play York Bowen’s ‘Fantasia’, and four clarinet players will recreate the magic of Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestrally colourful ‘Scheherazade’. At the very end of the evening, the Southern Witch will be evoked by a trombone ensemble in a composition of the same title by János Másik.

Set in the Roman Empire around 74 BC, Spartacus was László Seregi's first true full-length ballet, which at one stroke became a milestone in Hungarian dance life. Since 1968, one generation after another has enjoyed the historically themed choreography, which treats the story of the ancient slave revolt in such a way that its true message is not the rebellion itself, but rather human emotions and choices under pressure.
