A Csárdáskirálynőért rajongó Hitlertől nem fogadta el a tiszteletbeli árja-státuszt, amivel Bécsben maradva megmenthette volna maga és a családja életét. Kálmán a nehezebb utat választotta: Amerikába emigrált. Sose akart nősülni. Ennek ellenére kétszer is feleségül vette a nála évtizedekkel fiatalabb, Szibériában született fiatal Verát.
